Hannemann Portrait Unveiled at Honolulu Hale
Mufi Hannemann returned to Honolulu Hale on December 15 for the unveiling of his official mayoral portrait in the historic building’s first floor gallery. Dozens of friends, family members, and familiar faces were on hand for the ceremony, including Mayor Peter Carlisle and the three managing directors who served during his term, Jeff Coelho, Wayne Hashiro, and Kirk Caldwell.
In his brief remarks, Hannemann reminisced about his six year term as the 12th elected mayor of the City & County of Honolulu, telling the crowd that every decision he made was guided by the principle of “Leaving this place better than you found it.” Hannemann also acknowledged the dedication and energy of the cabinet and staff members who worked alongside him at Honolulu Hale.
Hannemann’s official portrait, done by Dana Edmunds Photography, now hangs at the opposite end of the hall from the portrait of Joseph Fern, the first mayor of Honolulu. Hannemann noted the symbolism of this arrangement, saying, “As a young boy growing up in Kalihi, with the encouragement of my parents, it was at Fern Elementary that I first dreamed I could one day become the leader of this great city.”
