Kauai, Maui show fierce support in two Mufi Hannemann fundraisers
Hundreds of Maui and Kauai supporters showed up in force at two late June fundraisers for Mufi Hannemann.
A June 26 fundraiser at the War Memorial Convention Hall on Kauai was attended by almost 400 residents, business owners, and community and labor leaders.
On the menu was Hawaiian with ono kalua pig prepared by chef Guy Higa from the Marriott Hotel. Providing the evening’s entertainment, Hokuau Kaohelaulii along with Keola Worthington and Charlie Iona; and Charlie, John Mahi and Daynes Pabo.
Kauai Mayor Bernhard Carvalho was in attendance, and made his presence known during the evening’s highlight, singing numerous Hawaiian tunes with Hannemann. The duet continued into the night with everyone holding hands.
Various members of Carvalho’s Cabinet were in attendance, as were Council Chairman Jay Furfaro, Vice Chair JoAnn Yukimura, and Councilman Dickie Chang. County Prosecutor Shaylene Iseri-Carvalho and police Chief Darryl Perry showed support from the law enforcement side, while state Reps. Derek Kawakami and Dee Morikawa represented the lawmakers.
Not to be outdone, almost 100 signwavers showed up at the Maui Tropical Plantation on June 27 for a prefundraiser rally.
At the fundraiser, attendees included major labor, business and community leaders, including Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa and members of his Cabinet; House Speaker Emeritus Joe Souki, state Rep. Gil Keith-Agaran, and Maui Councilmembers Gladys Baisa, Mike Victorino, Don Couch, Joseph Pontanilla, and Bob Carroll.
Senate President Shan Tsutsui sent a personal message to attendees. Live entertainment was provided by Asian Blend and Deja Vu & Na Kaikunane.
