UPW is tenth union to endorse Hannemann

The United Public Workers, Local 646 has announced its endorsement of former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives from Hawaii’s second congressional district.

UPW represents 13,000 civil service workers across Hawaii, including cafeteria workers, custodians, electricians, emergency medical technicians, correctional officers, licensed nurses and nurses’ aides, refuse collectors, treatment plant operators and mechanics.

UPW State Director Dayton Nakanelua stated, “We believe that Mufi Hannemann has the experience and the vision to effectively represent Hawaii in Congress. Mufi and I have worked closely together since our days as Cabinet officials in the Waihe‘e Administration through the time he was Mayor and I dealt with him on collective bargaining agreements. His support for our members and working families throughout our state has been unwavering. ”

Statement of Mufi Hannemann on UPW Endorsement

Mufi Hannemann said, “I am extremely pleased to receive this endorsement from UPW head Dayton Nakanelua and his members. Many of the UPW members are blue-collar workers, who are critical to the operations of government. Given my own working class background, I identify with the needs, hopes, and aspirations of the membership of UPW. I look forward to taking their needs and desires with me to Washington, D.C. and continuing to be a champion for the working class, as I’ve always been throughout my career.”

Today’s endorsement brings Hannemann’s labor support to ten unions representing 46,000 active members and retirees throughout the state. In addition to UPW, the Teamsters, Iron Workers, Sheet Metal Workers, Painters, Glaziers, Floorlayers, Drywall Tapers, ILWU, and SHOPO have all announced their support.
