KAUAI – Mufi Hannemann was on the Garden Isle today to host the grand opening of his first campaign headquarters in the state.  More than 300 supporters welcomed the soon-to-be-announced candidate for governor with cheers and applause.  The opening was a family affair that included Hawaiian-style food and entertainment by some of Kauai’s top talent.

Momentum for Hannemann to join the race for governor has been building on Kauai since March, when hundreds of supporters came together at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall to show their support for his run at governor.

“I was deeply moved by the excitement and support I received from the people of Kauai tonight.  Many expressed to me that they are frustrated with Oahu-centered leadership and want a leader who is dedicated to working with the people of Kaua’i,” said Mufi Hannemann.  “The people of Kaua’i know I am someone who understands their issues and the importance of having all islands involved in the major decisions facing our state."

Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Council Chair Kaipo Asing, and Councilmember Dickie Chang were among the many garden isle civic and community leaders who turned out to show their support for Hannemann.  State Representative James Tokioka, former State Representative Ezra Kanoho and Turk Tokita were also in attendance.

Hannemann also received strong support from the Kaua’i Chapter of SHOPO, ILWU, local firefighters, and the United Public Workers Union.  ILWU and SHOPO have already endorsed Hannemann as a candidate for governor, citing his vision and experience to put Hawaii back on the right track

Support on the Neighbor Islands has been exceptionally strong for Hannemann, one of the co-founders of the Hawaii Council of Mayors. Recently, the Hawaii Council of Mayors succeeded in lobbying the legislature to preserve the counties' share of the hotel room tax revenues and stepped up to reach an agreement with the United Public Workers for a new collective bargaining pact after talks with the State broke down.

“We were honored to have Mufi on Kaua’i and thrilled with today’s turnout,” said Kaua’i Campaign Coordinator Russell Grady.  The hundreds that have turned out to support Mufi is a testament to his leadership and the connection he has with the people of Kaua’i.”
