Scholar-Athlete Awards at Aiea, Pearl City, Waipahu
Mufi Hannemann will again be offering his Scholar-Athlete Award to outstanding college-bound seniors at Aiea, Pearl City, and Waipahu high schools. The three schools are in the City Council district he represented from 1994 to 2000.
The award recognizes outstanding scholar-athletes. One male and one female student from each school will receive a $500 award to apply toward their degrees at an accredited institution of higher education.
Award recipients will be selected based on these criteria: senior class standing; excelled in at least one sport during the school year; passing grades in all core courses and a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale); and leadership qualities and character in extracurricular or community activities.

Applicants should submit their applications to their counselors or scholarship committees for forwarding to the Scholar-Athlete Selection Committee.

Leadership Award for Students of Samoan Ancestry
Mufi Hannemann will also be awarding $500 scholarships to two students, one male and one female, who demonstrate the academic promise and leadership potential Samoans will need to fulfill their roles as citizens and to contribute to the progress and prosperity of Hawaii and our nation. The awards are named in honor of his father and mother: the Gustav Hannemann Leadership Award for the male and Faiaso Soliai Hannemann Leadership Award for the female.
Award recipients will be selected based on these criteria: senior class standing; be of Samoan ancestry; grade-point average of 2.5 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) in college preparatory coursework; participation in student government, preferably in leadership positions, and participation in on-campus activities or community service; and selection for honors and awards.

Harvard Books to Top Juniors
As the first Samoan-American graduate of Harvard University, Mufi Hannemann has honored local high school juniors who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, achievement in extracurricular pursuits, and sound personal character with the Harvard Book Award. The awards, which Hannemann, a Harvard honors graduate, has sponsored and awarded for more than 30 years, encourage outstanding Hawaii students to continue to strive for excellence in all of their endeavors.
The award, which has been presented at thousands of schools around the world since 1910, is given in the hopes that this recognition will inspire students to reach their fullest potential in their post-graduate endeavors.
Each selected school will nominate its top junior to receive the award.
