Women for Mufi

Strong and capable women have always played prominent roles in the life of Mufi Hannemann. His mother was the daughter of a Samoan high chief, his Iolani School teacher was Mrs. Beverly Aiwohi both of whom stressed the importance of balance in his life by encouraging him to work his mind as much as his body. With this kind of encouragement he would take his education to new heights which ultimately landed him a Harvard education. He would go on to marry his wife Gail, an influential woman in her own right, who serves as Executive Director for a major nonprofit organization in Hawaii.

Under Mufi's administration, more women have been appointed to key leadership positions than in any past administration. Moreover, Mufi has been a longstanding supporter of gender equity. He is the founder and continued sponsor of the annual Mufi Hannemann Basketball Jamboree, Hawaii's only post-season showcase of women's roundball featuring prep all-stars, former collegiate athletes, and keiki teams. Since the Jamboree's founding in 1994, more than 1,000 women and girls have participated in the competition.
Women for Mufi recently held a luncheon to support Mufi Hannemann's campaign for Governor. To view pictures from the luncheon, please click here.
